Black Volcanic Rock is mainly composed of iron and magnesium minerals. All the rocks have approximately similar compositional minerals. Some rocks have a spongy or glassy appearance depending on the gases trapped and the cooling time of lava flow.

Why is Volcanic Rock black?

The outer layer of the lava flow that cools quickly turns into black. It is composed of minerals and glass particles, which give it a glassy appearance. The interior colour of the layer could be grey to black.
