Dark Iron Wood from School of Scape is genuinely exceptional. The dense, dark twisted root formations have an organic complexity that no other wood I've used can match. Every piece has a unique character – the branching patterns, the dark brown-black colouration, and the gnarled surface texture all combine to create something that looks like it came straight out of an ancient forest stream. My 90cm nature aquarium built around this wood as the centrepiece has received more compliments than any tank I've ever set up. An extraordinary piece of hardscape.

One of the most frustrating things about driftwood is waiting for it to sink and the initial tannin leaching period. Dark Iron Wood is so dense that the piece I ordered sank within a day with just a minimal weight on it, and tannin release was so low I never had any meaningful water discolouration. Within a week of adding it to my tank the water was crystal clear and the wood looked absolutely stunning. The dark colour and intricate root structure are exactly what I wanted for my forest-style scape. Brilliant product.

The surface texture of Dark Iron Wood is absolutely ideal for attaching epiphyte plants. Mosses grip the gnarled bark-like surface almost on their own and with a small amount of aquascaping glue the attachment is immediate and permanent. I have java moss, weeping moss, anubias nana, and several bucephalandra varieties all attached to my piece of Dark Iron Wood and the result looks like a genuine miniature forest tree. The dark wood colour provides a perfect backdrop for all the green growth. Exceptional hardscape.

My neocaridina shrimp have completely colonised the Dark Iron Wood in my tank. The intricate twisted root structure provides endless hiding spots, foraging surfaces, and biofilm-rich crevices that the shrimp explore constantly. Watching them work their way through every detail of the wood is endlessly entertaining and it clearly provides an enriching environment for them. After about three weeks in the tank, a fine biofilm developed across the surface of the Dark Iron Wood which looked absolutely natural and was immediately colonised by my Amano shrimp and otocinclus. This is a sign of a healthy, maturing aquascape and the wood's complex surface structure makes it even more pronounced and interesting than on smoother driftwood.
