About this fish

Splashing Tetra is a slender, upward angled surface tetra famous for one of the most remarkable breeding behaviours in freshwater fish. Pairs leap from the water to deposit eggs on overhanging leaves, and the male then splashes them to keep the clutch wet until they hatch.

Why you will love it

  • Genuinely unique breeding behaviour, a fish that jumps to spawn
  • Subtle amber and pearl colouration with elegant elongated fins
  • Occupies the upper water column, ideal alongside mid and bottom dwellers
  • Beautiful in blackwater and biotope style scapes

Care at a glance

  • Approx size in store: 3 to 4cm
  • Keep in groups of 6 or more
  • Temperature: 24 to 28 C
  • pH: 5.5 to 7.5, softer acidic water preferred
  • Minimum tank: 60L with a tight fitting lid, they are strong jumpers
  • Diet: floating flake, micro pellets, frozen and live foods
  • Temperament: peaceful and slightly shy

Tank mates

Excellent with other South American species such as tetras, pencilfish, corydoras and dwarf cichlids. Provide floating plants, dim lighting and gentle flow. Leave a small air gap above the water line if you hope to see the spawning behaviour.
