Scaper's Soil - Premium Aquarium Substrate

Scaper's Soil is a high-quality aquarium substrate designed to provide the perfect foundation for planted tanks and aquascapes. Produced in Japan with a blend of natural soil and volcanic ash, this premium substrate creates an optimal growing environment for aquatic plants while stabilising water conditions for fish and shrimp.

Available in Three Variants:

  • Normal Black 10L - $75 - Ideal for larger aquascapes and established planted tanks
  • Extra Fine Black 5L - $45 - Perfect for small tanks, shrimp breeding, and delicate carpeting plants
  • Brown 5L - $45 - Natural brown tone for biotope aquascapes and earthy aesthetics

Key Benefits:

  • Prevents ammonia spikes and new tank syndrome
  • Naturally lowers and stabilises pH for optimal plant growth
  • Rich in essential nutrients for healthy root development
  • Porous structure promotes beneficial bacteria colonisation
  • Ideal for shrimp breeding and sensitive species

Unlike many alternatives, Scaper's Soil is carefully formulated to avoid high ammonia spikes that often cause algae blooms in new tanks. This makes it a reliable, beginner-friendly option for aquarists who want healthy plant growth without the challenges of excessive new tank syndrome.

Usage instructions

  • Calculate substrate requirement using the formula: Length × Width × Height (in inches) ÷ 60 = Litres of soil needed
  • Rinse lightly if desired, but generally ready for direct use
  • Use extra fine granules in smaller tanks (<20 gallons) or as a top layer to anchor delicate plants
  • For larger aquariums (20 gallons+), combine with normal granules for deeper rooting and stability
  • Monitor water parameters during the first weeks, as mild cycling adjustments may occur

Recommendations and precautions

  • Suitable for planted aquariums, shrimp habitats, and tropical fish tanks
  • Always cycle your tank and ensure ammonia/nitrite levels are at 0 before adding livestock
  • Store in a cool, dry place and keep sealed to retain soil quality
  • Use root-feeding plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC) with extra fine granules for the best anchoring
  • Perform partial water changes during the initial weeks of setup to support tank stability

Best substrate I've used in 8 years of aquascaping

I've been keeping planted tanks for the better part of a decade and I've worked my way through a lot of substrates over the years. Some too coarse, some that spike ammonia for weeks, some that just look terrible once plants start growing through them. Scaper's Soil Black Extra Fine is genuinely one of the best I've come across. The extra fine 1mm granule size is ideal for my nano tank setup – I'm running a 20 litre with a hairgrass carpet and some monte carlo, and the roots have absolutely no trouble penetrating the soil. The black colour contrast against the green growth looks stunning. Ammonia stayed surprisingly low during the cycle – I was monitoring daily and it peaked well below what I've experienced with other active substrates. pH buffered down to about 6.7 which is perfect for my crystal red shrimp colony. Six weeks in and the shrimp are breeding, the plants are lush, and I couldn't be happier. Brilliant product from School of Scape.

Perfect for carpeting plants in nano tanks

I picked up the 5L bag of Scaper's Soil Extra Fine for my 30cm cube and I'm really impressed. The granule size is noticeably finer than the normal version which makes a huge difference when you're trying to anchor delicate foreground plants like HC cuba and glossostigma. They root in so quickly and hold firm without being disturbed by flow or feeding. The black colour really makes the scape pop too – very clean and professional looking. pH has settled nicely around 6.8 which is great for my Caridina shrimp. Would definitely buy again.

Solid substrate, very happy with results

Good quality soil that does exactly what it says. I layered about 5cm of the extra fine black in my 60P and planted it up with a mix of foreground and midground plants. Everything is growing well and the substrate looks beautiful. pH buffered down to around 6.8 which is right in the sweet spot for my plants. The fine grain also means there are very few gaps for detritus to collect which makes maintenance easier. Only minor feedback is the shipping cost for a heavy item like this, but that's expected and the product quality makes it worthwhile.

Shrimp are thriving and breeding like crazy

I specifically bought this for a dedicated crystal black shrimp breeding tank and I'm extremely pleased with how it's performed. The soil buffers the pH reliably to around 6.6–6.8 which is exactly where I want it for Caridina species. Ammonia was kept well in check during the initial cycle and I was able to add the first shrimp after about 3 weeks. They settled in immediately and within a month I had my first batch of shrimplets. The extra fine granule size is also great because the babies can forage freely through the substrate surface without any trouble. This is now my go-to substrate for shrimp breeding.

Great product, arrived well packaged

Was a bit nervous ordering substrate online given the weight and potential for damage in transit, but it arrived perfectly packaged and in great condition. The soil itself is excellent – the extra fine grade is noticeably smaller than standard aquarium soil and makes a real difference for planting delicate species. I've used it in a 45cm aquascape with riccia and mini pellia and the plants are growing beautifully. Fish and shrimp are all healthy and water parameters are stable. Great product and fast shipping from School of Scape as always.

Worth every cent for planted tanks

Compared to some cheaper substrates I've tried, this one is in a completely different league. The extra fine black variant gives a really polished, clean look to the tank floor and the nutrient content clearly supports strong root growth. My crypts and vallisneria took off within the first two weeks. pH has stayed consistent at around 6.9 and I haven't had to do anything special to maintain it. The 10L bag is good value when you consider how far it goes in a mid-sized aquarium. Very happy with this purchase and will be ordering again for my next build.

Used it for my iwagumi – stunning results

Just completed a full iwagumi layout with Seiryu stone and a HC cuba carpet using Scaper's Soil Extra Fine Black as the substrate. I cannot stress how much the right substrate matters for a scape like this. The extra fine grain anchors the tiny HC plants perfectly – they don't shift or float when you're placing them, and they rooted in within two weeks. The contrast between the black soil, the grey stone, and the bright green carpet is exactly what I was going for. pH has settled at 6.7 which is ideal for the caridina shrimp I'm planning to add. The Japanese origin really shows – this is a premium product.

Good substrate but took a few weeks to fully stabilise

I want to give an honest review here. The soil is genuinely good quality – the texture is consistent, the colour is a rich deep black, and the grain size is perfect for foreground planting. My HC cuba is rooting in beautifully and the shrimp seem very comfortable in it. My only note is that parameters took a few weeks to fully stabilise, with some minor ammonia readings in the first week. This is pretty normal for active substrate and I was prepared for it, but worth mentioning for beginners. Once it stabilised everything has been perfect. pH is holding at 6.8, plants are growing fast, and the overall look of the tank is excellent. Would recommend.

First time using an active substrate – very impressed

I'd always used inert gravel before this so switching to an active soil was a bit of a leap of faith. I did a lot of research before choosing Scaper's Soil and I'm really glad I did. The extra fine black is exactly what I needed for my 30 litre planted setup. I followed the cycling instructions, waited the full three weeks before adding fish, and the tank has been running beautifully ever since. The plants are growing faster than they ever did in gravel and the water is noticeably clearer. My ember tetras and neon tetras look stunning against the dark substrate. Really happy with this product and with School of Scape in general.

Consistent quality across multiple orders

This is my third time ordering Scaper's Soil from School of Scape and the quality is always consistent. I now use it as my go-to substrate for every planted build. The extra fine black variant is my preference – the granule size really is perfect for aquascaping and it photographs incredibly well thanks to the deep, uniform colour. I run it at about 5–6cm depth in most of my tanks and the root development in even demanding plants like glossostigma and eleocharis acicularis is excellent. I've recommended this to multiple people in my local aquascaping group and they've all had great results. A reliable, high-quality product.

A game changer for my caridina shrimp breeding setup

I've been breeding caridina shrimp seriously for about three years now and finding the right substrate was always a challenge. I'd tried a few well-known Japanese brands and while they were good, the pricing and availability were inconsistent. Scaper's Soil Extra Fine from School of Scape has genuinely become my preferred option. The pH buffering is reliable and consistent – I'm getting readings between 6.5 and 6.8 which is right where I want it for my CRS and CBS colonies. The soft, fine granule texture is also ideal for shrimplets who are always sifting through the substrate surface. After running it for four months across two dedicated breeding tanks, I can confidently say this is the best value active substrate available in Australia. The shrimp are thriving, breeding frequency is excellent, and I've had no unexplained losses since switching to this soil.

A thorough review after 3 months

I like to give reviews only after I've had enough time to properly evaluate a product, so here is my honest assessment after three months of running Scaper's Soil Extra Fine Black in my 60cm planted aquarium. The initial setup went smoothly – I laid approximately 6cm of substrate, planted up with a range of foreground and background species, and began the cycle. Ammonia readings during the first two weeks were manageable and within normal active substrate range. By week three, parameters had stabilised beautifully. Since then, pH has held consistently between 6.7 and 6.9 without any additional buffering required. Plant growth has been exceptional – my Monte Carlo carpet has spread fully across the foreground and I've had to trim it three times already. The deep black colour has not faded or shifted at all, which is a common complaint with some cheaper substrates. My cherry shrimp colony is healthy and has been breeding actively. The only minor note I have is that like all active soils, it will eventually exhaust its buffering capacity, but that's the nature of the product rather than a flaw. For the price point, this is outstanding value and I'll be ordering again when I set up my next tank.

Great for small tanks and nano scapes

Bought the 5L bag of Extra Fine Black for a 20L nano build and it was the perfect amount for a 4–5cm layer. The fine grain size is ideal for this scale of tank – large granules can look out of proportion in a small scape but this looks very natural and clean. My foreground plants (staurogyne repens and mini anubias nana) have rooted in solidly and the layout looks exactly as I envisioned it. The black colour gives a great contrast with the green plants and light-coloured rocks I'm using. Fish are healthy and shrimp are active. Really pleased with the product.

Excellent pH buffering for sensitive species

I keep discus and altum angelfish alongside some high-light demanding plants and getting the water chemistry right is critical. Scaper's Soil Extra Fine has been brilliant for maintaining the soft, slightly acidic water my fish need. pH stabilised at 6.6 without me needing to add any additional buffering agents. The plant growth has also been phenomenal – my Amazon swords and rotala variants are growing faster than I've ever seen. The fine grain size is also great for Corydoras and other bottom-dwelling species as it doesn't scratch their barbels the way coarser substrates can. Highly recommend for anyone keeping sensitive tropical species.

Would have liked faster cycling but overall very good

Four stars because the cycling process took a bit longer than I anticipated – about 4 weeks before I was comfortable adding livestock. That said, this isn't unusual for active substrate and in hindsight I may have just been impatient. The product itself is excellent. The granule consistency is really uniform, the black colour is vivid and deep, and once the tank settled it's been performing perfectly. Plants are rooting well, shrimp are happy, and pH is stable. I'd still recommend it without hesitation – just plan for a thorough cycle before adding anything sensitive.

Stunning black colour that doesn't fade

One thing I've always cared about in a substrate is whether the colour holds up over time. I've had experiences with black substrates that started looking washed out and grey after a few months, which completely ruins the aesthetic of a scape. Scaper's Soil Extra Fine Black has stayed a deep, rich black colour after five months and it still looks as good as the day I set it up. Beyond the aesthetics, the performance has been excellent – pH stability, plant root development, and livestock health are all exactly where I want them. This is a substrate I'll keep coming back to.

Reliable and professional quality

I've been using this substrate across several of my builds now and it consistently delivers. The extra fine variant is particularly useful when creating layered substrates – I typically use the normal grade at the bottom and the fine as a top layer, which gives excellent plant anchoring across the board. The volcanic ash composition clearly provides good nutrient content for roots, as growth rates in my tanks have been noticeably higher than with other substrates. pH management is hands-off and stable. For Australian aquascapers, this is genuinely the best substrate available locally for the price point. School of Scape continues to be my preferred supplier.

Does exactly what it promises – highly recommend

Purchased the 10L bag to set up a 90cm nature style aquarium and it covered the footprint at a good 5cm depth with some left over. Setup was straightforward – laid the soil, planted up, filled slowly to avoid disturbing the surface, and started the cycle. Water clouded slightly for the first day then cleared up beautifully. Within 3 weeks I had stable parameters and began adding fish. My plants – rotala, ludwigia, various mosses, and a java fern background – are all growing vigorously and the tank looks incredible. The black substrate really makes the colours of both plants and fish pop. Great product, will order again.
