The Red Calico Molly is a striking livebearer with a bold patchwork of red, black, and white across its body — no two fish are exactly alike. Hardy, peaceful, and endlessly active, this molly is a fantastic choice for community aquariums and planted tanks alike. A favourite at School of Scape for its colour, personality, and ease of care.

Why you will love it

  • Eye-catching calico patterning in vivid red, black, and white
  • Peaceful and sociable — gets along well with most community fish
  • Active swimmer that adds life and movement to any aquarium
  • Beginner-friendly and highly adaptable to a range of water conditions
  • Livebearers — may breed readily in your tank, adding extra excitement

Care requirements

  • Care level: Easy
  • Adult size: 6–8 cm
  • Temperature: 24–28°C
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • Swimming level: All levels
  • Recommended group size: 3+ (mixed or single sex)

Feeding

Omnivorous and unfussy — accepts high-quality flake, micro pellets, and enjoys blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. Supplement with frozen or live foods for best colouration.

Compatibility

Ideal tankmates include other livebearers, tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species. Mollies appreciate a little aquarium salt in the water, though this is optional in a community setup.

Breeding

As a livebearer, the Red Calico Molly gives birth to free-swimming fry. A well-planted tank with dense cover will give fry the best chance of survival.
