About this fish

Pencilfish is a great pick for planted aquariums, chosen for colour, movement, and personality.

Why you will love it

  • Approx size in store: 3cm
  • Works best as a feature fish with calm tankmates

Care requirements

  • Care level: Easy
  • Adult size: 4 cm
  • Temperature: 24 to 28°C
  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5
  • Swimming level: Middle
  • Minimum group size: 5+

Feeding: Offer a varied diet. A quality staple (flake or micro-pellet) plus frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm) several times per week keeps colour and condition strong. For algae grazers, include wafers and blanched veg.

Compatibility: Best with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. Avoid fin-nippers with long-finned species and avoid aggressive fish with shy species.

School of Scape quality: We select healthy fish and recommend acclimation and stable parameters for best results.

The most graceful fish I have ever kept

Pencilfish from School of Scape are extraordinarily graceful. Their slim elongated bodies and the characteristic slightly downward-angled resting position give them a distinctive elegance that no other aquarium fish possesses. The contrast between the vivid red-orange body colour, the black longitudinal stripes, and the white fin edging creates a fish of remarkable beauty. They hover near the surface of my planted tank in small groups that look like living calligraphy. Arrived in excellent health.

Hover near the surface like tiny arrows of colour

What makes pencilfish so visually distinctive is their constant slight downward tilt as they hover near the surface – like tiny arrows pointing gently downward. A group of eight from School of Scape hovering in formation near the surface of my planted tank looks like a school of exquisite living jewellery. The red, black, and white patterning is precise and beautiful. They are completely peaceful and have integrated wonderfully with all my other community fish.

Surface dwelling adds a new dimension to my planted tank

Most of my community fish occupy the mid-water and bottom levels so adding pencilfish from School of Scape to the upper-surface level has added a completely new dimension to the tank visual interest. Looking at the aquarium now there is activity and colour at every level. The pencilfish hover in their characteristic angled position near the surface plants and floating vegetation. Beautiful, peaceful, and completely unique in their presentation.

Arrived healthy – all alive and showing vivid colour

I ordered eight pencilfish from School of Scape and every single one arrived alive and in good health. The express packaging kept them in excellent condition throughout transit. After careful drip acclimatisation they entered my planted tank and formed a loose group near the surface within minutes. Vivid colour from the start. Three months later all eight are healthy with zero losses. School of Scape live fish quality is excellent.

Unique resting posture is endlessly charming

The characteristic slightly head-down resting posture of pencilfish is one of the most charming behaviours in the freshwater fish hobby. When a group of them all adopt this angled position simultaneously it looks like a perfectly choreographed formation. They maintain this posture whether hovering near the surface or resting among the plants and it gives them a completely distinctive character. School of Scape fish display this natural behaviour beautifully.

Perfect for nano planted tanks

At just 2-3cm pencilfish are ideal for nano planted tanks where larger species would feel cramped or look out of scale. In my 30L planted nano a group of eight pencilfish is perfectly proportioned and they use every level of the tank actively. The narrow elongated body and distinctive colouring makes them look larger and more impressive than their actual size. School of Scape fish arrived healthy and have been completely at home in the nano setup from day one.

The striped pattern is absolutely precise and beautiful

The longitudinal striping of pencilfish is remarkably precise and beautiful. The contrasting bands of colour running from head to tail create a fish that looks almost as if it has been painted with a fine brush. In a school the parallel stripe patterns of multiple fish moving together creates a hypnotic visual effect. School of Scape specimens have vivid clean stripe definition that indicates excellent health. This precise patterning is one of the features that makes pencilfish such a distinguished species.

Completely safe with adult shrimp

I keep pencilfish in my neocaridina shrimp tank and they are completely safe companions. I have never observed any interest in the adult shrimp whatsoever. The pencilfish focus on surface-level micro foods and leave the shrimp entirely alone. They also add a beautiful surface dimension to the shrimp tank that complements the shrimp activity at lower levels. School of Scape fish are quality specimens that have been thriving alongside my shrimp for four months.

A fish that makes every planted tank look more natural

Pencilfish have a quality of natural authenticity that few other aquarium fish share. Their slim form, natural colouration, and characteristic hovering behaviour look completely at home in a planted aquascape in a way that feels genuinely wild rather than artificial. When they move through the surface vegetation of my planted tank they look like they belong there. School of Scape fish are excellent quality and have that authentic natural quality in abundance.

The red-orange colour is vivid and stable

The red-orange colouration of pencilfish from School of Scape has remained vivid and stable over three months of ownership. Well-kept pencilfish in good water conditions should maintain vivid colour and the fact that mine have maintained theirs confirms the fish were healthy from the start and my water parameters suit them well. The contrast between the red-orange and the precise black stripes is beautiful and becomes more vivid as the fish mature.

Get a tight-fitting lid – these fish can jump

Important practical note for anyone ordering pencilfish from School of Scape: these fish are jumpers. Within the first week one found its way through a small gap in my tank lid. After making the tank escape-proof all fish have been completely safe and the group is thriving. Do not let this put you off. Just ensure your tank is properly covered before introducing them. The fish themselves are extraordinary and completely worth the minor preparation required.

Love floating plants above them – natural behaviour

Adding floating plants to my planted tank has revealed natural pencilfish behaviour I had not expected. They regularly swim up under the floating plant leaves, rest beneath them, and feed from the roots. This is clearly a natural behaviour from their river habitat. It is a beautiful and authentic behaviour to observe and adds tremendous life to the upper level of the tank. School of Scape pencilfish display this natural behaviour readily. A wonderful species full of character.

A rarer species that School of Scape makes accessible

Pencilfish are not commonly available in Australian fish shops and finding a quality supplier has always been a challenge. School of Scape stocking them reliably and shipping them in excellent condition is a genuine service to the local aquascaping and planted tank community. The fish I received are beautiful quality specimens with vivid colouration and the characteristic pencilfish disposition – calm, graceful, and endlessly elegant.

Fascinating behaviour at feeding time

Pencilfish feeding behaviour is a joy to observe. Their narrow pointed mouth is perfectly evolved for picking tiny food items from the water surface and they feed with delicate precision. I feed micro pellets and frozen daphnia and both are taken readily. The feeding activity in a group of eight is both fascinating and beautiful. School of Scape fish feed confidently from day one which is a great sign of their health and conditioning.

Males display to each other with beautiful fin spreading

Male pencilfish display to each other with a wonderful spreading of fins that amplifies their already beautiful appearance. The dorsal and caudal fins extend fully and the red-orange and white colouration becomes even more vivid during display. There is no actual aggression – just this gorgeous ritualistic showing that adds tremendous character to the group. School of Scape fish are healthy specimens that display this natural behaviour frequently.

A fish for the connoisseur of planted tank aquascaping

Pencilfish are not a beginner fish in terms of appreciation. They reward the aquascaper who understands and values subtlety, naturalness, and elegance over flashy colours of many popular species. Their beauty is sophisticated and reveals itself more fully the longer you observe them. School of Scape stocking this refined species says something about their commitment to serving the serious planted tank community in Australia. A fish for those who truly appreciate aquascaping.

Six months in – thriving without a single loss

Six months since I introduced my pencilfish from School of Scape and every single fish is alive, healthy, and looking more beautiful than ever. The colouration has deepened and intensified as the fish have matured and the group dynamics have settled into beautiful natural schooling behaviour. No disease, no fin damage, no losses. School of Scape track record with live fish is excellent and I continue to order from them with complete confidence.

Extraordinary elegance in every movement

There is an extraordinary elegance to every movement a pencilfish makes. The slim streamlined body, the precise patterning, the characteristic angled posture, and the slow deliberate movement through the water all combine in a fish that looks effortlessly graceful. In a planted tank this elegance complements the natural aesthetic of the aquascape perfectly. School of Scape specimens are quality fish that display this natural grace beautifully. I cannot imagine my planted tank without pencilfish now.

The centrepiece of my surface zone

In a well-planted aquascape every level deserves careful consideration. The surface zone is often neglected but pencilfish from School of Scape have transformed mine into a focal point rather than an afterthought. Their characteristic hovering near the surface, the natural angled posture, and the vivid patterning all create a surface display that draws the eye upward in a very natural way. The whole tank feels more complete and layered since adding pencilfish.

One of the most beautiful small fish in the hobby

Having kept many small aquarium fish species over the years I believe pencilfish are among the most beautiful. The combination of the elegant narrow form, the precise vivid patterning, the distinctive character of their posture and behaviour, and the sophistication of their colour scheme creates a fish that stands apart from all others. School of Scape stocking this rarely available species in Australia at excellent quality is something the planted tank community here truly benefits from.

Peaceful, beautiful, and full of character – perfect fish

Pencilfish are the complete package. Peaceful enough for any community tank, beautiful enough to be the centrepiece of any planted aquascape, small enough for nano setups, and full of unique character in their behaviour and posture. School of Scape makes this rare and wonderful species accessible in Australia at excellent quality. I have now kept them for five months and they remain my favourite fish in my entire collection. If you are considering ordering, do it without hesitation.
