About this fish

Pea Puffer is a great pick for planted aquariums, chosen for colour, movement, and personality.

Why you will love it

  • Snail control, nano feature fish with big personality
  • Approx size in store: 2cm
  • Works best as a feature fish with calm tankmates
  • Specialist community (semi-aggressive, fin-nipper; best species-only or carefully planned tank)

Care requirements

  • Care level: Moderate
  • Adult size: 3 cm
  • Temperature: 24 to 28°C
  • pH: 6.5 to 7.5
  • Swimming level: Middle
  • Minimum group size: 1

Feeding: Offer a varied diet. A quality staple (flake or micro-pellet) plus frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm) several times per week keeps colour and condition strong.

Compatibility: Best with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. Avoid fin-nippers with long-finned species and avoid aggressive fish with shy species.

  • Note: Can nip fins and bully slow or long-finned fish; best kept in groups with plenty of space and hiding spots

Nice and healthy fish highly recommended

The most charismatic fish I have ever kept

Pea Puffers from School of Scape are extraordinary little fish. At just 1 inch they pack more personality than fish ten times their size. They hover in the water column, independently rotate each eye, and approach the front glass with obvious curiosity. Their greenish-yellow body with dark iridescent patches is beautiful. School of Scape delivered healthy active fish and they have been a pure joy for four months.

Incredible personality in the smallest package

Pea Puffers are genuinely one of the most intelligent and interactive freshwater fish available. They recognise their owner, come to the front of the tank at feeding time, and investigate everything with obvious curiosity. The helicopter-like hovering, the independently moving eyes, and the occasional inflation when startled all make them endlessly entertaining. School of Scape fish arrived healthy.

A densely planted tank is essential and looks magnificent

Pea Puffers require a densely planted tank and the effort required to create that environment results in the most beautiful aquascape I have ever made. My puffer tank is now a lush planted jungle with java moss, anubias, crypts, and floating frogbit. The puffers weave through the plants constantly and the visual result is stunning.

They completely eliminated my pest snail problem

I had a significant pest snail infestation before adding Pea Puffers from School of Scape. Within two weeks the snail population had been dramatically reduced and within a month the infestation was essentially eliminated. The fish themselves are thriving and have become the centrepiece of a beautiful planted tank. A genuinely useful and beautiful fish.

Round belly indicates good health – these are perfect

One way to assess the health of a pea puffer is by their belly shape. A nicely rounded belly indicates good nutrition and health. School of Scape Pea Puffers arrived with properly rounded bellies indicating they were well-fed and healthy before shipping. They have maintained this healthy appearance for three months. Excellent fish quality.

The most interactive freshwater fish in the hobby

No freshwater fish I have kept comes close to Pea Puffers for interactive behaviour. They actively watch you, come to the front of the tank when you approach, follow your finger along the glass, and react to your presence in a way that makes them feel genuinely aware of you. School of Scape fish had this remarkable personality from day one.

Successfully keeping three in a 60L planted tank

I keep three Pea Puffers in a 60L heavily planted tank and the setup has been successful for four months. The key is providing more than enough plant cover so each fish has territory. The three fish have established their own areas and rarely interact aggressively. School of Scape fish arrived healthy. A rewarding challenge for an intermediate aquarist.

Watching them hunt is incredible

Pea Puffers are visual hunters and watching them hunt is one of the most entertaining things in the freshwater hobby. They spot prey from a distance, hover motionlessly while assessing the approach, then strike with surprising speed. School of Scape fish are clearly healthy predators with good hunting instincts.

Their eyes move independently – completely mesmerising

One of the most extraordinary physical features of Pea Puffers is the ability to move each eye completely independently. They can look forward with one eye and backward with the other simultaneously. Watching them assess their environment with this capability is mesmerising. School of Scape fish display this remarkable capability. Truly special fish.

They can inflate – witnessed it twice, incredible

Pea Puffers retain the pufferfish ability to inflate their bodies when stressed or threatened. I have seen my puffers from School of Scape do this twice during particularly startling moments. The inflation is obvious even at their tiny size. More importantly these fish are healthy, active, and thriving in my planted tank.

The perfect species-only tank fish

Pea Puffers work best as the only fish in their tank and creating a species-only tank dedicated to them is genuinely one of the most rewarding experiences in the hobby. A densely planted 40-60L tank with a group of three to five puffers is dynamic, visually beautiful, and endlessly entertaining. School of Scape fish arrived healthy.

Feeding on frozen bloodworms is a spectacle

Pea Puffers feeding on frozen bloodworms is one of the most entertaining feeding spectacles in freshwater fishkeeping. They hover over the bloodworm, assess it carefully with both eyes, then attack it with precision and enthusiasm. School of Scape fish accepted frozen bloodworms from day one which confirms they are healthy and well-conditioned.

Water quality is critical – they are indicator fish

Pea Puffers are sensitive to water quality and their behaviour immediately reflects any deterioration. If they seem lethargic it is a clear signal to check parameters. School of Scape fish arrived healthy and their activity level has been consistently high. They function as excellent living water quality indicators.

Arrived express post – all alive and immediately active

Pea Puffers from School of Scape arrived via express post in excellent condition. All fish were active and showing good colour on arrival. Within two hours they were exploring every corner of the tank and by the following morning were already hunting the small snails I had introduced as live food. School of Scape ships live fish reliably.

No aggression toward otocinclus – peaceful coexistence

I keep two Pea Puffers alongside a small group of otocinclus catfish and the coexistence has been completely peaceful. The otocinclus are generally ignored by the puffers which is consistent with the widely reported compatibility between these two species. School of Scape fish have shown no interest in the otos throughout three months of cohabitation.

More personality than any fish I have kept

I have kept many different freshwater fish species over many years but Pea Puffers have more individual personality than any of them. Each fish is distinct with its own temperament, curiosity level, and hunting style. School of Scape fish arrived healthy and their individual personalities were apparent within days. Endlessly entertaining.

The world smallest pufferfish is also the most charming

Pea Puffers hold the remarkable distinction of being the world smallest pufferfish and they are also arguably the most charming. Their tiny size makes their bold personality even more impressive. School of Scape delivers these extraordinary little fish in excellent condition. Five months without a single loss. Highest possible recommendation.

Best nano tank inhabitant available in the hobby

For nano tank setups Pea Puffers are unmatched as a species choice. Their small size is appropriate for smaller tanks, their personality provides maximum entertainment, and a planted nano tank designed around them is one of the most beautiful and dynamic aquarium setups you can create. School of Scape fish arrived healthy.

Six months in – thriving beautifully

Six months since I received my Pea Puffers from School of Scape and they are thriving in every way. Their colour is vivid, their bellies are nicely rounded, their activity level is high, and their hunting behaviour is enthusiastic. No disease, no losses, no issues of any kind. School of Scape fish quality is clearly excellent. Five stars.

Worth every cent for the experience they provide

Pea Puffers cost more than common community fish and provide a completely different and far more rewarding ownership experience. The intelligence, the personality, the hunting behaviour, the interactive nature, and the extraordinary physical characteristics all combine in a fish that provides more daily entertainment than any other freshwater species I have kept.

A fish that makes you rethink what freshwater keeping can be

Keeping Pea Puffers from School of Scape has fundamentally changed what I think is possible in a small freshwater aquarium. These tiny fish have given my nano tank a level of personality, dynamism, and visual interest I did not think possible in a 40L setup. School of Scape delivers them in excellent condition.
