Expert Tips
Hygrophila angustifolia 'Willow Leaf' is a versatile stem plant that offers both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. Plant in groups of 5-7 stems in the background to create lush, flowing features that add movement and depth to your aquascape. The long, narrow leaves create unique texture that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved plants. Under high lighting conditions, the plant develops stunning orange-red coloration that adds warm tones to your underwater landscape.
This plant performs best under medium to high lighting (35-130 PAR) with consistent CO2 injection, which promotes healthy growth and vibrant coloration. One unique characteristic of this species is its ability to indicate potassium deficiency - if you notice pinholes developing in the leaves, it's a sign that potassium levels may be low in your aquarium. Regular fertilization with balanced macro and micronutrients, particularly potassium, supports robust growth and prevents deficiency symptoms. The moderate growth rate means regular trimming is needed to maintain desired height and encourage bushier growth. Propagation is straightforward through stem cuttings - simply trim healthy tops and replant in substrate. This elegant plant is ideal for nature aquariums and Dutch-style layouts where its distinctive willow-like foliage can create striking vertical accents.
All plants are shipped carefully packaged to ensure they arrive in excellent condition. Live plants may vary slightly in size and colour from photos. Portion size: 5-7 stems.
Acclimation: Float the bag in your tank for 15 minutes to equalise temperature, then plant directly in substrate.
Lighting: Most aquatic plants thrive at 0.5+ watts/litre with 6500K colour temperature for 6-8 hours/day.
Fertilising: Use a quality liquid fertiliser weekly. Root tabs help heavy root feeders.
CO₂: While not essential for most plants, CO₂ injection dramatically improves growth and colour.
Trimming: Regular trimming encourages bushy, healthy growth and prevents shading of lower leaves.

It depends on the species. Check the Care guide tab — we've tagged each plant with difficulty (Easy / Medium / Advanced). Most of our range is suited to beginners with basic lighting.

Most aquatic plants we stock will grow without injected CO₂, but growth is dramatically faster and more vibrant with CO₂. The Care guide tab indicates whether CO₂ is required, recommended or optional.
