Bolbitis heudelotii is a striking and versatile aquatic plant prized for its large, broad leaves and distinctive growth habit. Unlike typical stem plants, Bolbitis grows from a rhizome, making it a unique and rewarding addition to any aquascape. Its bold, tropical foliage creates a dramatic focal point, while its ability to thrive in a range of conditions makes it accessible to aquarists of all experience levels.

Key Features:

  • Large, broad leaves create a bold tropical aesthetic
  • Rhizome-based growth — no substrate planting required
  • Thrives both submerged and emersed
  • Excellent for creating natural-looking foreground or midground features
  • Adaptable to a wide range of water parameters
  • Slow to moderate growth rate — low maintenance

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Low to Medium (20–50 PAR)
  • Temperature: 22–30°C (72–86°F)
  • pH: 5.5–7.5
  • CO₂: Not required (beneficial but optional)
  • Fertilization: Moderate — liquid fertiliser supports leaf development
  • Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Placement: Foreground to Midground

Aquascaping Applications:

Bolbitis heudelotii is ideally suited to foreground and midground positions where its broad, arching leaves can create a lush, carpet-like effect. Because it grows from a rhizome, it can be placed on top of the substrate or anchored to hardscape elements such as driftwood and rock — making it a versatile choice for nature-style and Iwagumi layouts. Its slow growth means it holds its shape well over time with minimal trimming.

Expert Tips:

Bolbitis is one of the most forgiving plants for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike. It tolerates low light conditions where many other plants would struggle, and its rhizome growth habit means it doesn't compete aggressively with neighbouring plants. For the best leaf colour and size, provide consistent liquid fertilisation and stable water parameters. The plant can also be grown emersed in paludarium setups, making it a great choice for riparium and wetland-style aquascapes.

All plants are shipped carefully packaged to ensure they arrive in excellent condition. Live plants may vary slightly in size and colour from photos. Portion size: 1 rhizome with 3–5 leaves.
