Lilaeopsis Novae-zelandiae, also known as New Zealand Grass, is one of the most elegant and natural-looking foreground plants used in aquascaping. With its delicate, fine leaves and lush, grassy growth, it creates a vibrant carpet effect that instantly elevates the aesthetics of any aquarium. Native to New Zealand, this aquatic plant mimics the look of a natural meadow underwater, providing a soft and textured green landscape that enhances modern and classic aquascaping layouts.

Unlike many fast-spreading carpet plants, Lilaeopsis grows steadily, making it easier to maintain and shape without overwhelming your tank. This slow but consistent growth makes it an excellent choice for aquascapers who prefer low-maintenance plants that still deliver impressive results. Once established, it forms a dense mat of greenery, adding depth, vibrancy, and a sense of scale to both large aquariums and nano tanks.

Key Features:

  • Delicate, fine grass-like leaves create natural meadow effect
  • Slow, steady growth for easy maintenance and control
  • Forms dense, lush carpet in foreground areas
  • Low-maintenance once established
  • Ideal for both large aquariums and nano tanks
  • Adds depth, texture, and sense of scale to aquascapes

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Medium to High
  • CO₂: Recommended for optimal growth and density
  • Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
  • Placement: Foreground carpeting plant

Aquascaping Applications:

Lilaeopsis Novae-zelandiae excels as a foreground carpeting plant in nature-style and Iwagumi layouts. Plant small portions 2-3 cm apart to allow spreading. The slow growth rate means less frequent trimming compared to faster carpeting plants, making it perfect for low-maintenance setups. With good lighting and CO₂, it forms a dense, grassy mat that creates a natural underwater meadow effect, adding elegance and tranquility to your aquascape.

CO2 requirements vary by species. Check the Care Information tab for this specific plant. Many of our plants can thrive without CO2, though growth may be slower.

Most of our aquarium plants are grown submerged (underwater), which means they adapt faster to your tank and are less likely to melt. This gives you stronger roots and instant success. The exception is our terrarium plants, which are grown emersed (above water)
