Hygrophila pinnatifida is a unique stem plant from India, admired for its deeply lobed, fern-like leaves and striking coloration. The foliage ranges from olive green to brown, and under high lighting with CO₂, the leaves develop stunning vibrant red-purple tones on the undersides that bring dramatic contrast to your aquascape.

Unlike most stem plants, Hygrophila pinnatifida can be attached to rocks or driftwood as an epiphyte, as well as planted in the substrate, making it a versatile choice for creative layouts and adding texture to hardscape elements.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive lobed, fern-like leaves with unique texture
  • Develops vibrant red-purple undersides under high light and CO₂
  • Versatile placement: can be attached to hardscape or planted in substrate
  • Works as both epiphyte and traditional stem plant
  • Provides striking contrast and visual interest in aquascapes
  • Ideal for midground placement or hardscape accents

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Medium to High
  • CO₂: Recommended for best coloration and growth
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Placement: Midground, epiphyte attachment, or accent plant

Aquascaping Applications:

Hygrophila pinnatifida excels when attached to vertical surfaces on driftwood or stone using fishing line, thread, or super glue gel, where it creates natural transitions and adds unique texture. It also works beautifully planted in the substrate as a midground feature. The distinctive lobed leaves and red-purple coloration become more pronounced with proper lighting and nutrient levels, making it a standout feature in nature-style aquascapes.

CO2 requirements vary by species. Check the Care Information tab for this specific plant. Many of our plants can thrive without CO2, though growth may be slower.

Most of our aquarium plants are grown submerged (underwater), which means they adapt faster to your tank and are less likely to melt. This gives you stronger roots and instant success. The exception is our terrarium plants, which are grown emersed (above water)
