Cryptocoryne parva is one of the smallest and slowest-growing species in the Cryptocoryne family, prized for its compact size and grass-like appearance. When grown submersed (fully underwater), it forms dense, low-lying clusters of narrow, bright green leaves that add a lush, carpet-like effect to the foreground of freshwater aquariums.

Unlike many other Cryptocoryne species, C. parva does not undergo significant leaf shape changes between emersed and submersed growth. Its submersed form typically features leaves 2–5 cm in length, growing in a rosette pattern that spreads gradually over time.

Cryptocoryne parva thrives in stable, nutrient-rich environments with moderate to high lighting. While CO₂ supplementation is not strictly necessary, it significantly enhances growth and helps the plant spread more quickly. Patience is key, as this species is known for its extremely slow growth rate.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne parva

  • Growth Form: Submersed (fully underwater)

  • Lighting: Medium to high

  • Growth Rate: Very slow

  • Height: 2–5 cm (0.8–2 inches)

  • Placement: Foreground

  • Care Level: Moderate

  • CO₂: Beneficial but optional

  • Ideal for: Aquascapers seeking a small, tidy foreground plant or carpet

Cryptocoryne parva (submersed grown) is an excellent choice for nano tanks, detailed aquascapes, or aquarists looking to achieve a natural, grassy look at the tank’s front. Its resilience and aesthetic make it a favorite for low-profile, high-impact aquascaping.

CO2 requirements vary by species. Check the Care Information tab for this specific plant. Many of our plants can thrive without CO2, though growth may be slower.

Most of our aquarium plants are grown submerged (underwater), which means they adapt faster to your tank and are less likely to melt. This gives you stronger roots and instant success. The exception is our terrarium plants, which are grown emersed (above water)

Due to the perishable nature of live plants, we cannot accept change-of-mind returns once dispatched. However, our 24-hour arrival guarantee covers any plants that arrive in poor condition.
