About this fish

Green Fire Tetra (Aphyocharax rathbuni)

Few fish light up a planted aquarium quite like the Green Fire Tetra. Named for the vivid crimson flush that glows across its belly and green flashing scales, this small but striking schooling fish brings a burst of warm colour to mid-water layers — a perfect contrast against lush green aquascapes.

Care at a Glance

  • Size: Up to 5 cm
  • Temperament: Peaceful, schooling
  • Recommended school size: 8+ for best behaviour and colour
  • Tank size: 60 L minimum
  • Water temperature: 22–28°C
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Diet: Omnivore — accepts quality flake, micro pellets, and frozen foods
  • Compatibility: Excellent with other small peaceful fish, shrimp (adults), and dwarf cichlids

Aquascaping Notes

Green Fire Tetras thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with gentle flow — conditions that mirror their natural South American habitat. Darker substrates and subdued lighting will intensify their red colouration. They're a natural fit for Nature Aquarium and Iwagumi-style layouts.
