About this fish

Ember Tetra is a great pick for planted aquariums, chosen for colour, movement, and personality.

Why you will love it

  • Nano tanks, large schools for colour effect (min. 10)
  • Approx size in store: 2cm
  • Best kept in groups of 8+
  • Community (very peaceful, shy)

Care requirements

  • Care level: Easy
  • Adult size: 2 cm
  • Temperature: 23 to 29°C
  • pH: 5.5 to 7.0
  • Swimming level: Middle
  • Minimum group size: 8+

Feeding: Offer a varied diet. A quality staple (flake or micro-pellet) plus frozen foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm) several times per week keeps colour and condition strong.

Compatibility: Best with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. Avoid fin-nippers with long-finned species and avoid aggressive fish with shy species.

School of Scape quality: We select healthy fish and recommend acclimation and stable parameters for best results.

Perfect nano fish – tiny but absolutely vivid

Ember Tetras from School of Scape are simply delightful. At just 2cm these tiny fish pack an extraordinary amount of colour into a very small package. The entire body is a vivid translucent orange that almost glows against a planted background. In a school of fifteen in my 20L nano tank they create a constantly moving orange cloud that is genuinely mesmerising. They are completely peaceful and leave every plant and invertebrate alone. Perfect nano tank fish.

Look incredible against green plants

The warm orange colouration of Ember Tetras is perfect against the green of aquatic plants. The complementary colours create a visual contrast that makes both the fish and the plants look more vivid than they would against neutral tankmates. My planted nano tank with a school of twenty embers looks like it belongs in a photography portfolio. School of Scape fish arrived healthy and the orange colour has been vivid and stable since day one.

Arrived in perfect condition – thriving from day one

I was slightly nervous about ordering such small fish online but School of Scape express shipping meant every ember tetra arrived alive and healthy. After careful acclimatisation they were swimming confidently and feeding within hours. Not a single loss during the first week or the month since. They school beautifully and the orange colour is vivid and stable. For nano fish these are easy to keep and incredibly rewarding to watch.

Perfect for shrimp tanks – completely peaceful

I keep ember tetras alongside my neocaridina shrimp and they are completely peaceful tankmates. I have never seen an ember tetra show any interest in an adult shrimp. The embers are so small and gentle they simply coexist with the shrimp colony without any predatory behaviour. The orange fish against the colourful shrimp creates a dynamic and beautiful tank. School of Scape embers arrived healthy and have been thriving alongside shrimp for three months.

Orange colour looks spectacular under LED lighting

Under my high-output LED the Ember Tetras from School of Scape glow with extraordinary intensity. The translucent orange body catches and refracts light in a way that makes these tiny fish look like moving gems. A school of twenty in a heavily planted nano tank under good lighting is one of the most photogenic aquarium setups I have ever created. The fish are also very easy to keep and completely peaceful.

Eat readily from day one – no fussy feeding

One thing I appreciate about Ember Tetras is how readily they accept food. From the first day they were confidently feeding on micro pellets, crushed flake, and frozen daphnia with no hesitation. Their tiny mouths need appropriately sized food but once you figure that out they are genuinely unfussy eaters. They are also active and visible throughout the day. School of Scape fish are clearly well-fed and in good condition from the start.

Beginner-friendly and absolutely beautiful

Ember Tetras were my first live fish purchase from School of Scape and they were the perfect choice for a beginner. They are hardy, peaceful, easy to feed, and tolerant of a reasonable range of water parameters. They also happen to be extraordinarily beautiful for such a common and accessible fish. The vivid orange colour against green plants is genuinely stunning. Six months in and my school of fifteen are all healthy and the tank looks better every day.

They bring my planted tank to life

Before adding Ember Tetras my planted tank was beautiful but felt a bit still and lifeless. The school of twenty embers I ordered from School of Scape completely transformed that. They are constantly active and the constant movement of that orange cloud against the green plants gives the tank a genuine sense of life and energy. They are also brave little fish that come to the front of the tank whenever I approach, which is charming.

Look best in large numbers – get at least 15

Ember Tetras are at their best when kept in significant numbers. I started with ten and the school looked nice but adding another ten from School of Scape transformed the visual impact completely. With twenty fish the schooling behaviour becomes genuinely spectacular and the mass of orange colour is striking from across the room. They are small enough that twenty in a 20-30L tank is not overstocking. Commit to a good size school.

Perfect complementary fish for blue-toned tankmates

Ember Tetras warm orange colouration pairs beautifully with cool-toned blue fish. In my community tank alongside Cochus Blue Tetras also from School of Scape the complementary orange and blue creates an extraordinary colour contrast that elevates both species enormously. The two schools occupy different water column levels and the overall effect is genuinely stunning. School of Scape fish quality is consistently excellent across both species.

Tiny fish that make a massive impact

It is remarkable how much visual impact a tiny 2cm fish can have when kept in appropriate numbers. A school of twenty Ember Tetras in a heavily planted nano tank creates an orange spectacle that visitors cannot look away from. School of Scape specimens are vivid, healthy, and active. Four months without any losses and the colony looks as vibrant as the day they arrived. For any aquarist looking for a nano fish with maximum visual impact, ember tetras are the answer.

No losses after three months – excellent health

Three months since receiving my Ember Tetras from School of Scape and I have had zero losses. Every fish is active, eating well, and showing vivid orange colouration that indicates good health. These little fish are more robust than their tiny size suggests. The school cohesion has improved over time and they now move with beautiful synchronisation. A reliable, hardy, and beautiful nano fish. School of Scape is my preferred source for live fish in Australia.

Vivid colour stable over months – healthy and thriving

The vivid translucent orange of my Ember Tetras from School of Scape has remained consistent and stable over four months of ownership. I have seen ember tetras in some fish shops with washed-out pale colour which indicates stress or poor water quality. School of Scape fish were vivid from arrival and have stayed that way. A great indicator fish and a genuinely beautiful small species.

My favourite fish for nature aquarium setups

Over years of aquascaping I have tried many different fish for nature aquarium layouts and Ember Tetras have become my consistent first choice. The warm orange colour works beautifully in any planted layout, the peaceful temperament means they coexist with any tankmates, and their active schooling behaviour brings the scape to life. School of Scape specimens are healthy and vividly coloured. Available reliably which means I can always restock. Perfect fish from a perfect supplier.

Arrived express – all alive and vivid

Ordered Ember Tetras from School of Scape on a Tuesday, they arrived Thursday via express post. Every fish was alive, active, and showing vivid orange colouration on arrival. Acclimatisation went smoothly. For tiny nano fish to survive express shipping in perfect condition speaks to the quality of School of Scape packaging and care in timing shipments. Beautiful fish from a reliable supplier. Will order again without hesitation.

Instantly made my tank more beautiful

Adding a school of Ember Tetras to my planted nano tank was a decision that instantly made the tank more beautiful. The vivid orange school moving through the green aquascape is a genuinely stunning effect. School of Scape fish arrived in great condition and have settled in brilliantly. The orange colour is vivid and stable and they school tightly. For a small investment the visual return from Ember Tetras is extraordinary. Highest possible recommendation.
